Army wants new IED detection tech

The Army is looking for new technologies to detect improvised explosive devicesIEDs.

“Sensor investments in counter explosive threat technologies during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom have resulted in the solution of many niche problems but provided few long-term solutions for sustaining operational tempo, assured mobility and survivability,” notes the small business innovation research proposal.

Sensors should be something other than ground-penetrating radar. They should be capable of detecting both buried and surface explosives.

The technology should be applicable for commercial use in homeland security applications.
