Israeli firm Hod Hasharon has released a sensor that allows UAVs to peer through fog.
The short-wave infrared (SWIR) device “can identify silhouettes or moving objects from a distance of several kilometers, and if necessary from up to 20 kilometers,” according to Israel’s Ynet news site. The system weighs 65 kilograms.
“The devices can also identify suspicious targets through ‘distortion vapors’ that the ground creates on hot days, even through the haze,” Ynet said. “Until now the military had to use radar to detect suspicious movements in fog, which reduced the level of reliability of alarms because of the multiplicity of motions detected, even that of animals on the ground which triggered false alarms.”
