Detecting drones from moving vehicles

The Army wants its ground vehicles to detect drones using infrared sensors.

The project, titled “Algorithms for ground vehicle on-the-move detection of Unmanned Aerial Systems,” aims to allow vehicles to detect drones while moving, according to the Small Business Innovation Research announcement.

The goal is to “develop an algorithm approach to automatically detect and track small, slow UAS from a moving tactical platform using distributed aperture system (DAS) of uncooled IR cameras mounted on the hull of the vehicle,” the Army said. “The applicable UAS targets vary from micro through Class 2. Threat UAS targets are either hovering or in flight in various clutter environments from blue sky to terrain/urban backgrounds.”
